Wind Loads on Structures 2019:

This software performs all the wind load computations in ASCE 7-05, Section 6 and ASCE 7-10, or 16, Chapters 26-31. The software allows the user to "build" structures within the system (buildings, signs, chimneys, tanks, and other structures). It allows the user to enter a wind speed or choose basic wind speeds from the ATC Hazards by Location website. It provides for input of topographic features. It allows the user to have different exposures for different wind directions.A bullet list below describes the software's most significant features.

  • Dr. H. Scott Norville, Chairman of ASTM F12 Committee on Building Security, Director of the Glass Research and Testing Laboratory, faculty associate of the Wind Engineering Research Center, and Professor of Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University

  • Dr. Douglas A. Smith, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Faculty Associate of the Wind Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University.


  • At this time the 1998 and 2002 standards are NOT supported by Wind Loads on Structures 2019


  • General:

    • The software operates in a Windows TM environment.

    • The software is user friendly. It allows the user to update and change parameters continuously through the process of determining wind loads for a given structure without starting from scratch with each update. 

    • The software operates in US standard or SI metric units. The user can convert back and forth by toggling a switch on the toolbar.

    • The software computes wind loads by analytical method rather than the simplified method.

    • The software provides the user with options for determining wind loads for: 

      • buildings

      • chimneys, tanks, and similar structures

      • trussed towers

      • signs

      • domed structures

  • Location and Topography

    • The software directs the user to the ATC Hazards by Location website, where the user can determine the windspeeds according to location, standard and risk category.

    • The software allows the user to describe the topography by using parameters for the topographic conditions included in ASCE 7-05 Section 6 or ASCE 7-10/16 Chapter 26.

  • Buildings

    • The software allows the user to "build" the building by adding sections. The software does not constrain the user to a set of preordained footprints.

    • Software provides a drawing of the structure as the user adds sections.

    • The software incorporates all roof types and combinations defined in ASCE 7-05 or ASCE 7-10/16, Chapters 27-28.

    • Software allows the user to define roof slopes in terms of degrees or as a ratio (x:12) and to input all salient roof dimensions.

    • The software allows the user to obtain wind loads for the main wind force resisting system (MWRFS) at pre-selected height intervals or user-defined intervals.

    • When a building is completely defined in terms of geometry, the program will also perform the computations for the wind loads of user defined Components and Cladding.

    • 2005 (and later) open structure provisions have been added to allow roof shapes of monosloped, pitched and troughed. 

  • Calculations and Output

    • The user can "click" on various intermediate values of the MWFRS results to obtain the details of the calculations for a specific value, including: velocity pressure, gust effect factor, cp, cf and net pressures.

    • The software prints a full report of wind loads for the MWFRS and Components & Cladding methodologies.

SDG will issue a license for WLS 2019 valid for one year.  If you wish to continue using WLS 2019, you must renew annually. Failure to renew the license will result in WLS 2019 not operating.  Standards Design Group, Inc. must do this to continue operating and providing technical support.  For every year your serial number has expired you will be charged an annual fee until that amount equals the cost of a new purchase.
